Surfing in Hanalei Bay- Alex learns to surf, Kauai

lex has been surfing tandem with us for the past three years on our vacations in Hawaii, and we’ve occassionally pushed him into some waves on his own. But, we told him he had to wait until he was seven, and a strong swimmer, until he could truly start surfing. Well, he’ll be seven soon, and has been taking daily swim lessons with an excellent coach, (two of his former students went on to the Olympics. We have no Olympic aspirations for Alex, but at least we know the guys knows how to teach.) We still made Alex wear his life vest, in case he gets knocked in the head. Longboards are heavy, (up to 30+ pounds), and if it hits you in the skull the right way, it can knock you out. (Unconscious, the swim lessons won’t do much good.) But, everything came together. Alex had a terrific time learning to surf in Hanalei Bay this year. It was more crowded than last year. A summer camp for the local kids was going on at the time, so the water was just inundated with little ones learning to surf. But, the crowded conditions were probably to Alex’s benefit. When he gets back home and starts surfing in Santa Cruz, he will be facing exactly the same conditions– just much colder water, and the water will be dark, murky green, and not clear, crystal blue. Here’s Alex, surfing in Hanalei Bay, and a few pictures of Jovani, too, (Alex’s Dad.) Having been born and raised on a Pacific Island, Jovani always feels very much at home in Hawaii.
