Do I Need A Special License To Drive A Vespa Around In California?

I'm thinking of buying one of those scooters to get around the city and to work every once in a while. I noticed that they sell them in the mall near my house and there are even small dealerships.
But do I need to get a motorcycle license to drive one around legally? what about insurance?

The cutie selling Vespas down in Torrance said they would foot the cost of the CMSP Basic Rider Course if I bought a new Vespa.
Take the BRC : http://www.ca-msp.org/ , take certificate to DMV, pass the written pass the eye walk out with your M1.
I’d go with a 150 for the streets, a 250 if you plan to hit the freeways. The 50cc scooters can’t even keep up with traffic on California Residential Streets. Make sure it’s a Vespa and not some Chinese knock off.
(don’t know where LGI is, but in California the M1 is the motorcycle license, good for anything, while the M2 is for MoPeds only.
Yes you have to have a motorcycle license to operate a scooter and you also need insurance. There is an exception to this, if you purchase an MP3 with is a 3-wheel “scooter” you only need to standard auto license, but will still need insurance
You need an M1 license for 49cc. Over that I think you need a M2 licence. Anything with less than 49cc and has pedals you dont need a license or registration/insurance
same as a real motorcycle/lic/helmet/ins
