Just because you are using a wheelchair does not give you a reason to not go out and have fun with the rest of your family at your favorite theme park. The opposite is actually true. Amusement parks are now very accommodating to people that are handicapped.
You might want to avoid the park because the thought of having to deal with lines is too much. Well, most major theme parks, like Disneyland, allow you to avoid lines all together. This allows you the freedom to have room to maneuver your chair, and you don't slow down the speed of the line of the ride.
Cutting in line isn't just for the person in the wheelchair or his or her helper. The entire group gets to take advantage of getting to the front of the line. You usually just go through a different lane, or exit lane, to get to the ride.
Some theme parks don't have an automatic "cutting", but you can get the same effect by getting a "quick pass" ticket. This allows you to have a reserved spot in the front of the line with all the rides. This can be beneficial so you don't have to wait in line.
The downfall is that you will have to pay the extra expense for this. It can quickly add up, especially since you have to buy a pass for everyone in your group. Research your theme park before you go to see what accommodations they have for those who are handicapped. Ideally you would want to find one that has free services.
Most theme parks offer motorized wheelchairs or scooters. Look for a motorized chair center at the park. Motorized chairs can make the trip more pleasant because it will give you or your assistant a break from having to push you around all day at the park.
See which bathrooms are wheelchair accessible. Do the same for restaurants. Not every bathroom or restaurant will have wheelchair access, so look at a map and plan accordingly.
Accommodations are better now than they ever have been. While some theme parks are still a little behind the times, most are very accommodating to those who are handicapped. With a little preparation you will find yourself having a pleasant experience with your family at the park.
